LaPD Solutions created the term the Moccasin Approach® based on the above saying, which is usually said to be of Native American origin. From our research, it first appeared in a poem called “Judge Softly” written by Mary T. Lathrap in 1895. The poem suggests we should see things from the eyes of others first.
Regardless of its origin, we have taken the concept and applied it to how we believe Emotional Intelligence (EI) should be used as the fundamental approach to all people's communication and interaction. Whether people are leaders, managers, peers or subordinates, the hierarchy, position or role doesn’t matter in this context! In its fullest form, the Moccasin Approach® is designed to either significantly improve organisational culture or create a superb culture regardless of role or hierarchical position.
If we make a conscious effort to see things from the perspective of others before communicating with them, we may well see things differently and therefore speak, act and approach the person and the situation differently. We will do so due to our empathy for that person’s perspective, and in some cases, we may even decide to go to a different person altogether due to what we have considered. But there has to be a balance between what that person prefers, what we prefer and what the organisation requires.
To change a culture and move people from defensive, negative or even sabotage tendencies to a more positive, sharing and collaborative approach, we need to identify what your organisation sees as “Core Values”. We need to clarify what behaviours the organisation expects to see their people evidence daily. People must live by those values and behaviours to change the culture positively.
