The Phoenix Effect

This one-day workshop focuses on how to improve our Organisational Culture (OC). Not the one that is said to exist, but the real one that is lived and whispered about daily. The real OC is plagued by political football which impacts our ability to be open, honest and to challenge poor work, Management or Leadership.

Our Workshop Description

Our Performance Management (PM) workshop is based on Emotional Intelligence (EI), and it focuses on helping organisations to move away from traditional PM processes and work hard at reinventing them under a different name and a different approach aimed at supporting and collaborating to help both the Manager/Leader and the colleague.

Historically PM sessions have been every six months or even annually, which, in our opinion, is no good. PM meetings are often treated with little importance and an almost tick-box attitude. This clearly does not help either party, so we focus very much on changing that.

In our opinion, the PM meeting should be an opportunity where both parties discuss what is best for each other whilst being mindful of job descriptions and realistic expectations whilst considering various situations both at work and for the individual.

We discuss the importance of “facilitating” feedback instead of just giving it. We explore our “Reasoning Questions” to show how they work, why they are critical and what benefits they bring.

We discuss the usefulness of a Skills Matrix and various other tools to help both parties work towards the common goal of the best possible output but in the best conditions.

We introduce our PM Cycle and discuss the benefits of that and how it works, along with “Consequence Conversations” and their use.

“Some” of our Typical Content

(All our workshops can be adapted to meet your organisational requirements)

  • We open with our ingredients of Emotional Intelligence (EI).
  • We then delve into the truth about Organisational Culture (OC) and share our honest thoughts and opinions.
  • Everyone completes our OC self-assessment and, if willing, will share at least some of their thinking from that.
  • Small group discussions to establish aspects of OC issues?
  • What causes these issues, and what can we suggest as possible solutions?
  • How will the fire burn down the old culture, and how will the new culture rise from those ashes and plan the change?
  • We will discuss our ES2 thinking and see why it is critical to this Pheonix Effect objective.
  • We discuss “Consequence Conversations” and why they must be used.
  • We look at our “ARCHWAY Approach”® to understand why that can be used as a health checker.

Who Should Attend and Why?

Who? - We recommend all Leaders and Managers or a diverse cross-section of employees (volunteers) from the Senior Leadership Team level to team members. They will form an Organisational Culture Engagement Team (OCET) after this workshop to drive the change required correctly. They will create a line of communication through the organisation to help everyone understand the OCETs purpose, how they plan to prepare and bring about the change required, and why the cooperation of every colleague is critical to the team's success.

Why? -For the Phoenix Effect to work, everyone must support it in every way. It should be mentioned in the People Strategy and be discussed at every opportunity, and at every level with the OCET ensuring the same message is cascaded.

This can not be allowed to become just a good idea that dies a death. It must be actioned and pushed constantly. “Belief creates reality” is an important phrase because if just a few believe this to be no good, it will spread quickly and be lost.

Find the right volunteers, and give them the time needed to make it work. Help them light the fire and raise the new culture, and your organisation will reap the rewards in terms of employee engagement, retention and profit forever.
